How to Open a VSDX File on Mac (Free Visio Viewer Options)
Need to open a VSDX file on Mac? Step-by-step ways to view Visio files for free: a native viewer, Finder Quick Look, Visio for the web, and old .vsd files.
To open a VSDX file on a Mac, install a Mac app that reads Visio files, such as vsdx.app, which opens and views .vsdx files for free (read-only). Once it is installed, you can also preview .vsdx files in Finder by selecting one and pressing the Space bar. If you have a Microsoft 365 plan that includes Visio, you can open the file in Visio for the web instead. Microsoft's free Visio Viewer only runs on Windows, so it is not an option on macOS.
Why your Mac can't open a .vsdx file
A .vsdx file is a Microsoft Visio drawing: a flowchart, org chart, network diagram, floor plan, or similar. macOS has no built-in app that understands the format, so double-clicking the file usually does nothing useful, and Preview cannot show it. If you want the background on the format itself, see what is a VSDX file.
As of November 2026, Microsoft does not make a Mac desktop version of Visio, and Microsoft Visio Viewer, the free viewer for Windows, has no Mac version. So "Visio viewer for Mac" really means a third-party app, a browser-based option, or a virtual machine. (The full picture is in our Visio for Mac guide.)
Ways to open a VSDX file on Mac: quick comparison
| Method | Cost to view | Uploads your file? | Works offline? | Can edit? |

Third-party details are as of November 2026.
Method 1: Open a VSDX file with vsdx.app (free, read-only)
vsdx.app is a native Mac application, built in Swift and AppKit, that opens, edits, and saves Visio .vsdx files. The free download lets you open and view files, and export them to PDF or PNG. Editing needs a paid plan, but if you only need to look at a diagram someone sent you, the free version covers that.
Steps:
- Go to vsdx.app/download and download the app. It is distributed from the website only, not the Mac App Store.
- Install it. Your Mac needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
- Open your .vsdx file in vsdx.app.
- Browse the diagram. Use the page tabs at the bottom to move between pages in a multi-page drawing, and zoom in to read small labels.
What to expect:
- The file stays on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded, and viewing works offline.
- The layout follows Windows Visio (Ribbon tabs, a shapes panel on the left, page tabs at the bottom), so the drawing looks familiar if you have seen it in Visio.
- Very complex files, with many masters, complex ShapeSheet formulas, or macros, may not display completely.
If you later need to edit: click Sign in in the app, authorize in your browser, and choose Pro ($9.9/month or $99/year) or Lifetime ($199 one-time) on the pricing page. Saved files remain .vsdx, so they open again in Visio on Windows.
Method 2: Preview VSDX files in Finder with Quick Look
After you install vsdx.app, Finder can preview .vsdx files the same way it previews PDFs and images. This is the fastest way to check what is inside a file without opening any app.
Steps:
- Open the folder containing the .vsdx file in Finder.
- Select the file.
- Press the Space bar. A Quick Look preview of the drawing appears.
- Press Space again to close it.
Finder also shows thumbnails for .vsdx files, so in icon or gallery view you can see which diagram is which without opening them one by one.
Method 3: Open the file in Visio for the web via OneDrive
If your work or school account has a Microsoft 365 plan that includes Visio, you can open the file in your browser.
Steps:
- Sign in to OneDrive or Microsoft 365 in Safari or Chrome.
- Upload the .vsdx file to OneDrive (or open it where it already lives in OneDrive or SharePoint).
- Click the file. It opens in Visio for the web.
Keep in mind:
- This needs a Microsoft 365 plan that includes Visio. Check with your IT team if you are not sure.
- It needs an internet connection, and the file has to be in OneDrive or SharePoint.
- For a work file, this is usually the option your company has already approved.
Method 4: Online VSDX viewers (think about privacy first)
Searching for "vsdx viewer" or "visio file viewer" turns up many websites where you upload a file and view it in the browser. They can be handy for a one-off, non-sensitive diagram.
Before you use one, consider what is in the file. Visio diagrams often contain network layouts, IP addresses, system architecture, org charts with names, or internal processes. Uploading to an unknown site sends that information to someone else's server, and you usually cannot confirm what happens to it afterward. For anything confidential, use a method that keeps the file local (Methods 1 and 2) or one your company already approves (Method 3).
draw.io (diagrams.net), which is free and open source, can also import .vsdx files. Keep in mind that importing converts the diagram into draw.io's own format, so what you see may differ from the original. Our Visio alternatives for Mac article compares these tools in more detail.
Method 5: Opening old .vsd files on a Mac
Files ending in .vsd use the older binary Visio format (Visio 2000–2010, and Visio 5). Because it is an older format, check that a tool actually supports .vsd before relying on it.
vsdx.app opens .vsd files by converting them into a new .vsdx copy. Your original .vsd file is not overwritten.
Steps:
- Open the .vsd file in vsdx.app.
- The app converts it and opens a new .vsdx copy.
- View the copy, or edit and save it with a paid plan.
Known limitations with old .vsd files:
- Connectors are not glued to shapes after conversion, so moving a shape will not drag its connectors along. You may need to reconnect lines.
- Embedded images show as placeholders.
If you have many old .vsd files that you will keep using, converting them once to .vsdx makes them easier to open everywhere, including in Visio on Windows.
Which method should you use?
- You just received a file and want to see it: install vsdx.app and open it, or press Space in Finder.
- You need to check many files quickly: Quick Look and Finder thumbnails.
- Your company runs on Microsoft 365 with Visio: Visio for the web via OneDrive.
- The file is not sensitive and you can't install software: an online viewer, accepting the upload.
- You have an old .vsd file: vsdx.app, which converts it to a .vsdx copy.
FAQ
Is there a Visio Viewer for Mac?
Microsoft Visio Viewer is Windows-only, and as of November 2026 there is no Mac version. On a Mac, you can use a third-party app such as vsdx.app, whose free version opens and views .vsdx files read-only.
Can I open a VSDX file on Mac for free?
Yes. The free version of vsdx.app opens and views .vsdx files without a subscription, and after installing it you can preview files with Quick Look in Finder. draw.io, which is free, can also import .vsdx files.
Why won't Preview open my VSDX file?
Preview on macOS does not support the Visio format. You need an app that reads .vsdx files. After installing vsdx.app, Finder's Quick Look (press Space) can show the drawing.
How do I open a .vsd file on a Mac?
.vsd is the older Visio format. vsdx.app opens .vsd files from Visio 2000–2010 and Visio 5 by converting them into a new .vsdx copy, leaving the original file untouched. Connectors lose their gluing and embedded images show as placeholders after conversion.
Are online VSDX viewers safe?
They work, but you are uploading your file to someone else's server. That is fine for a harmless diagram, but avoid it for network diagrams, architecture drawings, or anything confidential. A local app keeps the file on your Mac.
Can I edit the VSDX file after opening it?
In vsdx.app, editing requires a paid plan (Pro or Lifetime). Edits are saved back to .vsdx, and content you did not change is kept as it was, so the file still opens in Visio on Windows.
Next step
The quickest way to see what is inside a .vsdx file on your Mac is to download vsdx.app and open it for free. If you need to edit it afterward, see the plans on the pricing page.
